In every Sant'Egidio community in the world - like here in the picture in Goma - has been remembered Elard Alumando, died on June 10th in the hospital in Johannesburg where he had been hospitalized after a serious accident few months ago.

Member of the Presidential Council, Elard was among the first responsible people for the Community in Malawi. He, seen as a reference person for many in the country, dreamed of the redemption of a generation and a periphery through the action of Sant'Egidio, of DREAM and BRAVO programs, through the mercy and hope that flow from the Gospel.

The Community of Sant'Egidio in Kiev, that has been visiting for years an elderly house in the city, gathered the elders to pray for the victims. At the same time, in that institution as well in the society, it continues to raise awareness in favor of the possibility for someone who is older and even partially handicapped to stay in his/her own home instead of going to a hospice.

With this aim Sant'Egidio is spreading the "Letter of Maria", a Roman woman one, asking aloud the elderly is given possibility to remain at home along their last years.

Children, youth, elderly, friends of the Community of Sant'Egidio marched in a caravan of mercy and peace on the streets of downtown Douala, towards the Holy Door of the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul's. 

At the passage of the Holy Door prayers were risen, focused on the works of mercy, for the protection of the very young and the elderly, against violence and lynchings, for the healing of the sick.
