As happened for Modesta Valenti in Rome, in many other communities around the world are remembered the names of those who lost their lives in the streets and squares of our cities. Because of cold, harsh living conditions, indifference. Not a short list, for a memory that is at the same time prayer, consolation for those who knew those faces, committment to ensure that mercy and solidarity are stronger than the cold of winter and of heart.

Manila, Philippines - A march to say "No!" to the death penalty ...

A great march collected citizens and Christian communities on 18th February: all together along the streets of the Philippine capital city, in order to say firmly "No!" to violence and to the death penalty.

Kigoma, Tanzania - Working hard, rejoycing together for the harvest ...

Students from two secondary schools and other members of the Sant'Egidio family in Kigoma are working in a plot in which corn and legumes will be planted soon. 

The harvest will be delivered to the institutions where the Community goes weekly for its service to the poorest.

In Kiev, a prayer for peace in Ukraine - a low-intensity war continues unfortunately in the east of the country, clashes have recently become more acute - and throughout the world. 

As Pope Francis said yesterday while visiting a Roman parish, "prayer is an antidote to wars".

Goma is the capital of North Kivu. The family of Sant'Egidio in that city, while the Great Lakes region is still threatened by tremors of violence and militias keep plundering and killing, participated in recent days at the "Amani" festival, meaning "peace" in Swahili, the frank language of the region.

A festival that has seen rushing into the city on the lake scores of singers and/or musical bands committed to peace, as well as tens of thousands of people.

In a house for the elderly in Lima town center two different worlds meet each other. A bond is born, between the uncertainty of the greenest years and the fragility of the greyest ones. That handshake makes both stronger and stronger.

It points out how co-housing experiences among elderly can be a viable alternative to institutionalization. An option for a "resistance against the human degradation and the flattening of the 'non-places'".

In London, cooking for those who live on the street: it is the weekly afternoon "cup of tea" - but of course it is much more than that - with the many homeless who Sant'Egidio meet in the UK capital city.
