A representative of the French communities of Sant'Egidio visited the so-called "jungle" of Calais, the slum near the Channel Tunnel where thousands of emigrants or refugees have settled, while they are trying to reach England.
Faced with the increasing difficulties to access the Eurotunnel more and more migrants end up building precarious settlements in an open space close to the sea, particularly exposed to bad weather. There are those who live there for months, shops have sprung up, as well as churches and mosques. The population, in the past coming especially from Africa, today counts an increasing component of Syrians and Iraqis.
